Introduction

An introduction to the inspection of fixed ladders on towers and structures. The course will include the design and construction of fixed ladders to British Standards as well as key points for inspection and safety.

This course provides both theoretical and practical training required for workers who access rooftops, high structures and flat roofs via fixed ladders greater than 2.5m. Delegates will be taught both safety access and rescue techniques using standard or delegate specific fall arrest systems

  • This course provides operational and practical guidance with reference to a number of BS and ISO standards where fixed ladder access are present.

These Include:

  • The Work at Height Regulations 2005
  • The Building Regulations 2000 (Approved Document K)
  • BS EN ISO 14122 Safety of machinery. Permanent means of access to machinery (4 parts)
  • BS 5395-1:2000 Stairs, ladders and walkways. Code of practice for the design, construction and maintenance of straight stairs and winders
  • BS 8437:2005 Code of Practice for selection, use and maintenance of personal fall protection systems and equipment for use in the workplace
  • BS EN 353 Personal Protective Equipment against falls from a height (2 parts)

The objective of the course is to provide specialist training in the following areas: 


Health and safety at work (Regulations) and accident statistics 

Risk assessments and method statements 

Tool box talks 

Component parts of rescue system lowering and personal evacuation sets 

Correct use of anchors and anchor point selection 

Use of fall arrest system - Latchway etc 

Set up temporary fall arrest systems and double lanyard techniques 

Rescue considerations and public protection 

PPE regulations and management 

Pre use inspection of fall arrest and work positioning systems 

Correct wearing and fitting (buddy checks) of PPE 

Component parts of a ladder fall arrest system 

Component parts of fall arrest and work positioning

Climbing PPE kit is provided by XI Training, however if delegates prefer to use their own PPE, they are required to bring along the associated and relevant inspection records.
